•September 21, 2009 • Leave a Comment

The Endless Quest for the Perfect Sound

•September 17, 2009 • 3 Comments

An interview with Andreas “Thedi” Thedens (KiEw / 13th Monkey)

AKM: Hi!

Thedi: Hi!

AKM: We finally meet

AKM: Online, but still…

Thedi: Soon in real life 😉

AKM: I can’t wait!

Thedi: Hehehe! We are also looking forward to the event!

AKM: So… let’s talk about you, your music and… everything

Thedi: Yes, we can do that!

AKM: The institute for electro-acoustic psychotherapy

Thedi: 🙂

AKM: Would you like to explain that?

Thedi: KiEw is an organization with doctors and patients situated in an asylum

Thedi: So it’s the institute for electro-acoustic psychotherapy

Thedi: With all the sounds patients are treated to get better

Thedi: If you attend a KiEw show you also are attending a therapy session

Thedi: You are in the middle of it

AKM: Attending a KiEw show means that the patient has to admit he is “sick”?

Thedi: Well – as it not clear where to draw the line between “Normality” and “Insanity” and who is “normal” and who is  “insane” you might be sick but perhaps you don’t think you are sick.

Thedi: It is not clear who is making the definition of “normal”

Thedi: So perhaps you are not feeling sick

Thedi: But that does not mean a KiEw therapy session would not help you to see things different

AKM: Different in which way?

Thedi: Different from your “normal” point of view

Thedi: The view gets mutated

AKM: From reality to what?

Thedi: From reality to a different reality

AKM: Your reality?

Thedi: A reality you see when you open your eyes

Thedi: Not the reality you think you see

Thedi: We might open your eyes

Thedi: And after all… it is not clear who is the doctor and who the patient

AKM: As a composer and a performer, how do you find the link between reality, sound, you and the patients needs?

Thedi: As usual and as in therapy that is a way of progression – you are always progressing

Thedi: So you have to see how people react to the acoustic therapy you give them

Thedi: The sound may differ – the theme and goal might be the same

Thedi: It is about searching for the perfect sound

AKM: You’re making this therapy for a long time now

AKM: You had this goal from the start?

Thedi: We started in 1990

Thedi: With dadaistic experiments

Thedi: And noisy stuff

Thedi: But from the first show on and from the very first tracks on the theme of therapy was always there

Thedi: The opening track on the first show (which was in 1993 as we did not plan to play live before that) was “Meister des Wahnsinns” (which means “master of madness”).

Thedi: The only line in that track that is repeated over and over in different voices is “Ich bin nicht verrückt” (“I am not insane”).

Thedi: Perhaps a little bit more being the patient than nowadays where also being the doctor is part of therapy

Thedi: It is kind of a circle

Thedi: The person that seems to be normal

Thedi: Gets insane (as other people would say)

Thedi: Gets a therapy (that may have worked but may be not)

Thedi: And then “cures” the doctors

Thedi: Which are also insane from that point on

Thedi: but as said before: the definition of “normal” and “insane” ar made from a person’s point of view – you cannot believe that point of view as it is not a state that is sure. it changes. flows. mutates.

AKM: A circle around the brain?

Thedi: Maybe kind of a cicle in brain – like synapses

AKM: Everything mutates. Even the therapy.

AKM: So the patient’s reaction to the therapy might change the therapy itself

Thedi: Yes

Thedi: But it is even not clear if the person who gave the therapy to someone would not have been the better patient and was more in need of a therapy

AKM: This therapy being your music, did you see in time some significant mutations?

AKM: And, if so, what cause that?

Thedi: Yes it mutated from the early dadaistic experiments to a more beat-orientated music which might be better to consume for some people (but only for some)

Thedi: The cause was that also the persons making the music mutated in some kind of way

Thedi: Progress I would call it

AKM: Can you name one of your albums and say “that was a turn-point”?

Thedi: Well, for sure “Feierabend” was a turn-point

Thedi: Because that track got so much club play in the time it was made

Thedi: A thing that was not planned

Thedi: We were very astonished

Thedi: Also it was the first record that came through Out Of Line

AKM: On that album you had a cover song (Funky Cold Medina by Tone-Loc)

AKM: How did you choose that?

Thedi: That was a personal choice 🙂

AKM: 🙂

Thedi: I like the track

Thedi: When I was going on a pupil exchange to Roseburg, Oregon, USA in 1989 the track was on the plane radio

Thedi: And I listened to it over and over

Thedi: I still had it in mind

Thedi: There are a few other tracks that might get a rework and cover version in the future

Thedi: But we do that rarely

AKM: By the way, you have a lot of versions of Feierabend

Thedi: Yes, there are some remixes of it 🙂

AKM: Is that the quest in searching for the perfect sound?

AKM: Not this track in particular, but thinking about all the remixes…

Thedi: That is more the result of progress and of exchanging ideas

Thedi: To see what other people have in mind what ideas they have when they hear your material

Thedi: The sounds get remutated

AKM: So, in some way, everybody works for the same goal? The perfect sound..

Thedi: Maybe the goal is not the perfect sound – maybe the goal is the way – the search of the perfect sound

Thedi: So the most important part is not the goal but the way to it

Thedi: And there are many ways

Thedi: So you have again – the way which is kind of therapy

AKM: From the public point of view, did you see some mutation during this therapy?

Thedi: Like what?

Thedi: Or to answer it shortly: sure.

AKM: How?

AKM: It was a 20 years trip

AKM: And counting…

Thedi: Yes. nearly 20 years – and counting. 🙂

AKM: When you released your first track

AKM: What was the reaction?

AKM: Compared to the present

Thedi: The first track was released on a tape limited to 10 – so not many people were able to buy it.

Thedi: 😉

Thedi: but all friends knew the tracks and liked it

Thedi: it was kind of heavy consumable stuff

Thedi: though coming on leight weight feet – it was not so noisy but that does not mean it was easy to listen to 😉

AKM: What were your influences back then?

Thedi: A mixture of Kraftwerk, Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubauten, Joy Division, Der Plan

AKM: Can you name other bands that influenced you during those years?

Thedi: Those were the ones that had the most influences on us

AKM: And from then to now…?

Thedi: Did not change much 😉

Thedi: Talking in genres we are open minded

so we listen to industrial, electro, techno, drum’n’bass, hiphop, pop, etc

Thedi: So from Nine Inch Nails to Johnny Cash and The Beastie Boys… everything 🙂

AKM: 🙂

AKM: Let’s get back to the present days…

Thedi: Sure 🙂

AKM: Mental [per]mutation, your forthcoming album…

Thedi: Is still in a state of progress

Thedi: But will soon see the light

AKM: What brings new this album?

Thedi: The album will bring a sound document of where we are in the present

Thedi: It is a link from the last album audiotherapy to the past noisy performance days and to the present

Thedi: I would call the sound fresh, progressed without changing th style

Thedi: When you listen to Käferfrühstück or Mister 29 and Delusion you can get a clue

AKM: Are you going to play some tracks from this album at Cybermental?

Thedi: yes.

Thedi: For sure Käferfrühstück which is one of my favorite tracks from the forthcoming album at the moment

Thedi: And also some tracks that we only played live on some shows so far

Thedi: Like “Stille/Stimme” which is also on the new album and which is still progressing

Thedi: We hope to finish all the album work soon

Thedi: The 13th Monkey debut album was recorded meanwhile

Thedi: And will be out in October

Thedi: We will also play new tracks with 13th Monkey at Cybermental

Thedi: We are really looking forward to Cybermental

Thedi: And are feeling very honored to play with both projects!

AKM: Besides KiEw and 13th Monkey, did you work on other projects?

Thedi: Only 13th Monkey and KiEw

Thedi: And remix works

Thedi: Which I cut down a bit because I need the time for the KiEw album at the moment

AKM: What was the need behind 13th Monkey’s birth?

Thedi: There was no need but it was kind of a different way to work

Thedi: Harm, the other half of 13th Monkey, is a good friend of mine

Thedi: He used to live round the corner (but now moved to Berlin)

Thedi: And is head of the Sonic Fiction crew – a techno collective from my hometown Lüneburg

Thedi: I used the name 13th Monkey first when I was doing a remix of a KiEw track for a compilation

Thedi: But then thought it would be great to form a project of it

Thedi: Harm played at the 15th anniversary show of KiEw with his solo project

Thedi: I invited him because I like his style

Thedi: So after that we thought we could turn 13th Monkey in a duo and met up

Thedi: Then we planned a party (“Digital Hardcore Riot”)

Thedi: So have a date for the first 13th Monkey show

Thedi: Ambassador 21 were also playing

Thedi: Good friends from Belarus who did the vocals on the KiEw track Mister 29.

Thedi: After our firt 13th Monkey show we progressed with it.

Thedi: 13th Monkey is a different way of work

Thedi: KiEw is first constructed in Zimmer 72 – my studio.

Thedi: (nearly all tracks)

Thedi: Then the live versions are done from that point on

Thedi: I use both of best worlds in KiEw – hardware and software

Thedi: 13th Monkey is hardware only

Thedi: We use a lot of groove boxes and filters

Thedi: 13th Monkey is about jamming around

Thedi: So we meet, jam around and if we like it we play it live

Thedi: The tracks that are on the debut album are also recorded in that way

Thedi: We recorded every track in one go – we played the track over and over until we liked the version

Thedi: No overdubs, no construction

Thedi: Sometimes KiEw tracks are mutated with 13th Monkey

AKM: The 13th Monkey live sessions are made in the same way?

Thedi: when we play live with 13th Monkey we have a basic concept of which trcks we would like to play

Thedi: The rest comes while playing

Thedi: As we use a lot ofgroove boxes it is pattern based

Thedi: So you can do short or long versions of tracks – none sound the same

Thedi: Sometimes it is not easy to transport all the stuff

Thedi: So I hope to bring over as much as possible to Cybermental 🙂

Thedi: Though we have to leave our table at home 😉

Thedi: I am very excited to see and hear all those Romanian bands playing at Cybermental

Thedi: And also about the audience!

AKM: Do you have something to say to the Romanian public?

Thedi: I am very excited about playing at Cybermental and I feel very honored and I hope the Romanian public will like our sound! 🙂

Thedi: And if they don’t like, that’s also fine – they can pretend they like it 😉

Thedi: hehhehe

Thedi: Or we continue our therapy as  long as they will like it!

AKM: 😀

AKM: Well… I couldn’t wait to be treated!

Thedi: 🙂

AKM: Thank You!

Thedi: Thank you too!

Introducing… Mr. Pan[k]sament!

•September 15, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Albumul acesta s-a născut greu… 13. Şi azi e marţi. 🙂

Mr. Pan[k]sament – One Bullet Revolution – 2009

01. Achtung Maybe [Alarm part 1] – instrumental

02. Sister Disaster [Choke, but don’t Swallow]

03. Bang Your Head

04. Doare Doar Când Respir [It Only Hurts When I Breath]

05. Emo Number Five [Bitches And Bruises] – instrumental

06. Vio-lent [Part 1 Slow Rape Part 2 Ambulance Song Part 3 Damage Control]

07. Pop Floor of Shame [Death of the Dance]

08. You’re Pretty [When I Fuck You]

09. MP3 Killed the MTV Star [Error 404] – instrumental

10. One Bullet [Resolution]

11. A Hole Lot of Nothings [Chips for free]

bonus tracks:

12. Nation’s Slum – Burn (1998)

13. Pansament – Punk Ain’t Dead (1989)

„A Kole Lot of Nothing (Exit Into the Sunrise) al noului meu proiect, Mr. Pan[k]sament, a fost descărcată de 12 ori.

One Bullet [Resolution]

It’s like a gun in my mouth

Stucked in the corner of doubts,

The trigger won’t pull me out

Nothing I can do about.

Questions are nailing me down,

The answers are stains on the wall,

Something it’s wrong, we both know,

The bullet won’t fill up the hole.

It’s like a bill left to pay

No cover for all what we spend,

The system just eat up itself,

This program it runs till the end.

Custom revolution demand,

Like a bottle washed ashore,

Cancel salvation on-line,

But the bullet won’t fill up the hole…

Save a bullet for you…

I save a bullet for you,

My last bullet it’s for you.
